Novelist’s Retreat

We have designed a retreat writing space for a renowned Novelist and researcher, in the Midlands.

In refurbishing an existing outbuilding, we have been inspired by the clients specialist interests. Contemporary asian references have been integrated to create an openable form, wrapped in timber slatted screens. The faced is fully retractable consisting of four separate moving elements sitting in front of a glazed elevation. On runners, the screens are easily moved by hand, overlapping each other when open.

The interior layout has been set out to Tatami mat dimensions, to create a simple minimalist layout of space. To the rear a wall of joinery is built in, to store away all materials and books. A log burner is built into an existing alcove for warmth.

Several options of form finding and elevational material treatment were tested, to arrive at a minimal and classically set out arrangement to the massing and surfaces.

The finishes are clad in a timber to match the external cladding, to create a strong connection with interior and exterior spaces, with the introduction of new roof lights to draw further natural light into the space.

A newly insulated and damp proof environment, increases the envelope efficiency, whilst creating a quiet and relaxing retreat for Novel writing.
