Common Wealth Table

Through co-design and consultation we have designed a responsive and multi-functional artwork for all in the Birmingham 2022 Festival.

Situated in Cathedral Square, also known as ‘Pigeon Park’ next to St Philips Cathedral. The Common Wealth Table will become the focus of the Cathedral’s activity during the Festival. Providing a communal shared space usable by all park users alongside community groups for shared meals, gatherings and events.

In developing ideas in our approach we carried out a public engagement to gain thoughts and ideas to contribute to the design of the piece through an accessible online survey. This was followed by key focussed co-design sessions with Lets Feed Brum and the local homeless community, and Cathedral staff to further enhance the responsive nature of the structure.

The Table is designed as a conversation starter; with edible planting at the centre of the table tops to add garnish to shared meals. The covered canopy creates shade for multi-purpose use around whilst also tying together an arched arrangement of individual bays, each of which will have a future legacy in another location after upcoming events and use at Pigeon Park.

Grand Union gallery will be programming a series of events and harvest dinners over the summer and autumn.

Longlisted for the MacEwen Award 2023.
